While walking in the halls of the classroom buildings last semester, it was hard to miss the posters advertising audition times for the spring musical “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
However, there may have been a miscommunication about the audition schedules for people wanting ensemble and dancing parts.
The signs stated: “There will only be a singing audition,” implying there would be no auditions for dancers.
This resulted in too few people to fill the ensemble positions during the first round of open auditions Nov. 29 and 30.
The musical’s score calls for 30 cast parts.
The roles are filled and choreography rehearsals are scheduled to start this week.
Ensemble member and Assistant Director Lauren Wahl said the ensemble is important.
“There are at least four numbers in the show that the chorus is absolutely vital,” Wahl said.
The chorus involves many groups of people in the storyline including prostitutes, holy people and crowd members.
Senior Branden Miller, stage manager, said that people can still be added to the cast.
“Anyone who wants to be in the show can come to auditions during the first week of February,” Miller said. “They can be in the background and still be a part of the production.”
There are nine leads, eight of which are males and one who is female. Seven lead roles are held by Pitt-Johnstown students, and the other two are played by Johnstown community members.
Sophomore Zach Pilot will be playing Jesus in his Pitt-Johnstown theater debut.
“It’s going to be a hard musical because of the time restraints and the challenging music,” Pilot said.
The cast has just under a month before the Feb. 18 opening night.
Wahl said that the cast is ready to put in the needed hard work.
“The path of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ had a whole bunch of potholes, but they are starting to get paved over…The cast works like a well-oiled machine,” Wahl said.
Pilot is devoted to looking the part by growing out his hair and beard. He said he is excited for the production.
“Seeing a good crowd reaction makes all the hard work worth it,” Pilot said.
