Sports - Flood ultimate Frisbee looking to make a splash

Pitt-Johnstown Ultimate Frisbee team members are guessing that UPJ students know little about the team.

Junior Adam Lewis said the team has tried to raise awareness.

“We usually hang fliers or posters in the (Student) Union to spread the word,” said Lewis.

Sophomore Eric Petrow said the sport is not for everyone, but the 36 team members are always looking for players.

“We are always looking for more athletic people,” said Petrow.

Team Members describe the game as a combination of basketball and football. Each team has seven players on the field.

Junior Jessie DeSimone said teams usually consist of five guys and two girls.

The object of the game is to score touchdowns, which are worth one point each.

Petrow said the player holding the Frisbee is the most restricted.

“When someone has the Frisbee, they can only pivot,” said Petrow. “They can’t run.”

Each game is played to 15 points and a team must win by two points. There are no referees. Instead, players call their own fouls.

Junior Anthony Karabinos said the team plays frequently.

“We play three or four times a week, usually on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thurs days,” said Karabinos.

“Tournaments are on Saturdays and Sundays and they consist of four games on Saturday and then on Sunday. You play until you lose.”

The team practices on a hill by, behind the practice soccer field.

Petrow said the field could use some serious work, but the conditions actually help the team.

“It does make us play much better when we go to fields that are nice because we’re so use to playing around the holes of our (field),” said Petrow.

Playoffs begin in the spring and rankings are based on the team members’ performance in Division III sectional tournaments.

The winners of sectionals advance to regionals and the regional winners can progress to nationals.

The team traveled Oct. 17 to the University of Georgetown, and played last weekend at Grove City and St. Vincent College.
